Earlier this year, École Champs Vallée School in Beaumont achieved the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Canada Silver Rating for the facility’s innovative open -space design, construction, and ongoing operation. The LEED ratings systems are promoted by the Canada Green Building Council to encourage and facilitate the development of more sustainable buildings. 

“Black Gold’s core values are reflected in the planning and construction of École Champs Vallée,” said Vice Chair Eckert. “Student-centered learning is possible when students actively participate in green initiatives and spaces. This beautiful building is a space planned to support the health, safety and wellbeing of all who work and learn in it.”

The school was awarded points, among others, for preventing pollution during construction; usage of high-efficiency water pumps, CFC-free refrigeration systems, and the multiple energy-efficient fixtures within the school, which has resulted in an annual energy cost savings of 55 per cent; water use reduction (no potable water is used for landscaping needs/installation of low-flush toilets); limiting neighborhood light pollution and reducing mercury in light fixtures; and for the ongoing collection and storage of recyclables. 

“On the programming side, all of our classes at École Champs Vallée School participate in recycling paper, cardboard, and refundable drink containers,” said Principal Patrick Gamache, “Our Grade 4 students lead the paper and cardboard recycling programs as they learn about Waste and Our World as part of their Science curriculum. ”

“The LEED certification of École Champs Vallée recognizes that the Division is working to provide safe, positive, healthy, highly efficient buildings while also reducing  environmental impact, from reducing construction carbon footprints to improving indoor air quality, to nurturing and supporting student and staff wellbeing,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Romanchuk. “It speaks to the Board’s strategic priorities of promoting wellness and responsible resource management.”
